If you are in need of air conditioning repair or routine maintenance, you know you can trust the professional HVAC technicians at AA Temperature Services. If you’ve ever done research on AC and HVAC terminology, you know it can get quite complicated and maybe even a little bit confusing. It’s our job to know your cooling system inside and out, so we’d like to help clear up confusion on some questions we are commonly asked by our customers. Knowing some of these commonly used terms may help you learn more about how your AC system works. We’re most commonly asked about tonnage & BTUs, efficiency, SEER, and temperature drop.
WHAT IS THE AC TONNAGE RATING?
Tonnage, also known as a ton, refers to the measurement of how much cold air is needed for the AC to cool your home. Tonnage takes another measurement — BTUs — in consideration. BTU’s, or British Thermal Units, are used to measure the amount of heat an A/C can remove from home per hour. When we look at these two measurements together, we can determine the proper size air conditioner to efficiently cool the home. For example, a one-ton A/C can remove the amount of 12,000 BTUs of heat. Therefore — in general — the more tonnage an A/C has, the more air it can cool.
WHAT IS THE AC SEER RATING?
Speaking of efficiency, it’s critical when it comes to your air conditioning system and saving on energy usage. Efficiency in the HVAC world refers to how well your AC is working without wasting energy. When it comes to understanding A/C units and efficiency, the AC SEER rating is something to keep in mind. SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. It is common for most newer household A/C systems to have a SEER rating of 13. Older systems may have a SEER rating of 10-12.
WHAT IS AC TEMPERATURE DROP?
Another term that is used commonly is what’s known as a temperature drop. This refers to the air going into your system versus the air moving out. For example, if the temperature inside your home is 95 degrees, your AC should be able to lower the temperature by 20 degrees.
