WHAT TO DO ABOUT A DIRTY AC COIL

Is the air coming from your vents warm? Does your system stop and restart continuously? Is there any frost built up on your AC? If you are experiencing any of these issues it is a good indicator that the evaporator coil — also known as an AC coil — may need to be replaced. A few other signs to look out for are:

  • Refrigerant leaking on the indoor unit
  • Hissing sounds coming from the unit
  • AC fails to turn on

WHAT IS AN AC COIL?

Fouled Air Conditioner Evaporator Coil | AA Temperature ServicesThe main purpose of an AC coil is to carry the refrigerant needed to absorb heat from inside your home and release it outside. The blower motor and the evaporator coil work together to cool the refrigerant in your home. As the blower motor forces through the AC coil, the coil needs to be free of dust and debris, or else this will restrain airflow and reduce heat transfer to the outside unit.

WHAT CAUSES A DIRTY AC COIL?

A common cause of a dirty AC coil is due to inconsistent filter changes. If you aren’t replacing your air filter monthly or at the recommended time, the particles and contaminants will continue to be blown over the main components of your central air system. A filter’s main purpose is to protect all of the main components of your system from dust, hair, and other particulate matter. This dust then covers your evaporator coil over time — as shown in the photo — and will affect the heat transfer process. The best way to keep your system free of dust and debris and to ensure a clean AC coil is to remember to change your filter monthly.
